Cashiers Valley Stretching beneath the sheer cliffs of Whiteside Mountain lays Cashiers Valley. For centuries, the valley has felt the influence of South Carolina. Rock Mountain, which overlooks the scenic greens of the High Hampton Inn and Country Club, has had its profile changed when the Charleston earthquake of 1886 sheared off its side.
Things have settled down since then. To visit the High Hampton Inn and Country Club is to step back in time to a slower, gentler era before air-conditioning and television, let alone e-mail and cell phones.
South Carolina Gov. Wade Hampton created his own mountain getaway here before the Civil War. E.L McKee of Sylva bought the property in 1921 and opened the inn to the public. When the inn burned to the ground in 1932, the Asheville Citizen headlined the damages at a whopping $75,000. The McKee family started rebuilding and reopened it the following year in the midst of the Great Depression.
Workers used whatever wood was lying around and so shingled the outside walls with rough bark. Today those shingles are priceless since they are made of American chestnut, which was wiped out by blight in the early 20th century. Those details have put the High Hampton on the National Register of Historic Places.
Most of the guests like the slow pace and the family gatherings at mealtime in the dining room. A family will have the same table for the length of their visit, much like tables on a cruise ship.
“People’s lives are so compressed these days. They can come up here and disconnect from that busy world. Sitting down to dinner and talking with each other, they can connect with each other,” said Will McKee Jr., the third-generation owner.
The Highlands-Cashiers area is home to some of Western North Carolina’s most spectacular waterfalls. Following are some of the can’t-miss cascades:
Upper WhiteWater Falls: Plunging 411 feet, this king of the cascades is the highest waterfall east of the Rockies. From Brevard: Drive west on U.S. 64. At Sapphire, turn left on N.C. 281 and go south to the WhiteWater Falls entrance. A short paved trail takes you to safe viewing areas.
Silver Run Falls: A cascade of 30 feet tumbles into a tranquil pool. The falls are located off N.C. 107, 4.1 miles south of Cashiers. Park in the pull-off on the left.
Glen Falls: Three large waterfalls, each dropping about 60 feet, make up Glen Falls. To get there, travel three miles south from Highlands on N.C. 106. Turn left on a gravel forest road at sign. A steep, one-mile trail leads to the falls.
Dry Falls: Despite the name, Dry Falls is a foaming 75-foot curtain of water flowing down the Cullasaja River below Highlands. You can walk behind the falls and stay dry. The falls parking lot is located on U.S. 64.
Bridal Veil Falls: Located on U.S. 64, this delicate flume of Water Falls 120 feet from the top of the cliffs right over the highway. Cars used to be able to drive behind the falls, but a rockslide has blocked the pavement. You can still walk behind for a better look.
Cullasaja Falls: The lower portion of Cullasaja Falls is a cascade of water, which flows about 250 feet. It is located on the Cullasaja River at the lower part of the Cullasaja Gorge. It is part of the Mountain Water Scenic Byway on U.S. 64, about nine miles west of Highlands. Cashiers, NC Resort area
